- Next up for e-commerce: consolidation- Now that the weakest of the e-commerce sites have fallen by the wayside, the next step in the process will be mergers, acquisitions and a general consolidation throughout the industry. With the slow economy and rock-bottom stock valuations, competitors are eyeing one another and brick-and-mortar operations are looking for good matches in cyberspace.
- Online Sales Slump, Post-Holiday-Style- According to the latest Online Consumer Index from the National Retail Federation (NRF), Forrester Research and Greenfield Online, online sales dropped from $6.1 billion in December 2000 to $3 billion in January 2001. The NRF Index results also reveal that the number of households online fell from 20 million in December to 13.3 million in January. Additionally, US households spent an average of $308 online in December and $228 in January.

- Shoppers optimistic about holiday spending- The holiday season looks promising, with 75% of shoppers planning to spend at least the same amount of money they did last year, and 15% planning to spend more, according to Advertising.com. E-commerce in particular should hold its own this season as, with 91% of respondents to a separate survey by Vividence intending to do at least some of their holiday shopping online this year.
- The ban on Internet tax expires- Congress failed to pass an extension on an Internet tax ban that expires this October. The House passed a two-year extension of the moratorium that did not address the sales tax issue; the measure was blocked in the Senate.
