HP takes a stake
in e-services firms
Through free equipment and an
equity investment, Hewlett Packard will give at least
$15 million to USA.net.
Today's deal along with others is part of HP's "e-services"
plan, which helps businesses move their operations on
to the Internet. HP often takes a percentage of a business
partner's revenue stream in exchange for hardware and
other services. HP will make an investment of an undisclosed
sum, as well as offer USA.net HP hardware, software,
and services, said Nick Earle, senior vice president
of HP's enterprise computing group. USA.net offers email
and other advanced messaging services through its Web
site.

There's no doubt that Hewlett-Packard is leading the
way in the e-services revolution. HP's step-by-step
approach to e-services provides solutions for every
aspect and level of the changing e-business landscape.
One of the e-services solution concepts that HP has
been developing seeks to address a critical challenge
facing end-user customers - reducing the cost structure
of applications running on high-end server systems like
the HP 3000. |

What does it take
to deliver e-services?
What solutions does Hewlett Packard
provide? To be successful in the e-services revolution,
companies will have to re-evaluate their needs for existing
services. In most cases, this will require upgrading
for expanded volume, greater connectivity, increased
flexibility, and tighter security. E-services are built
on the foundation of services already in place. However,
they significantly broaden the demands placed on current
systems. |

The Rise of E-Services
Internet Transactions Take on the Print World
If you're looking for a way to
save money and time on your print jobs, look no further
than the Internet. E-services are exploding on the print
scene because of their capabilities: They not only link
buyers and sellers, but include project management software,
tailored to the printing industry, that walks the user
from a first quote to a final invoice, including any
side trips required for revisions. Appearing in the
last couple of years, e-services are closely tied to
the Internet and require only a standard Web browser.
Fees are typically a few percentage points (one to five)
of the job's total invoice amount.

Preparing
for the E-Services Revolution
The Internet-based
economy is about to shift gears again. We're about to
move from the hype of portals and Web site traffic to
the real world of complex transactions being enacted
in real time, mostly behind the scenes. We're about
to embark on a new era in which most companies will
begin to focus on a few very strategic business processes.
Innovative companies will package up their strategic
processes as services that can be provided and/or launched
via the Internet. Soon, many business-to-business and
business-to-consumer activities will be handled by a
series of e-services locating one another, negotiating
with one another, and handling each other's requests.
